I don't read enough, but I want to. Can you suggest some books?

Postby Laika » Wed Jul 01, 2015 1:55 pm

I like reading, but it never seems to be on my mind. When it is, I don't know what to read. I like a good story (like A Song of Ice and Fire or the Lord of the Rings trilogy) but I've also enjoyed books in philosophy. I thoroughly enjoy reading responses to prompts in the writing prompts subreddit. I know I'm asking an extremely broad question, but I don't think Ill have the ability or willpower to find a page-turner on my own. Any suggestions? :D

Bertrand Russell does some great overview-ish books on philosophy, I read 'Problems of Philosophy' recently, which was short and sweet. I've also got 'HIstory of Western Philosophy' by him, which is pretty large but hopefully good!

I've read a bit of Russel in a philosophy course I took, I will definitely look into that. I think short and sweet will be necessary at first since I tend to quit halfway through big commitments. Thanks reality :3

Read some classic stuff like Picture of Dorian Grey, or Orwell's 1984

Russian literature is my favourite. Right now I'm reading Dead Souls by Gogol.

There the stars do not shine,
the sun is not visible,
the moon does not appear,
darkness is not found.

Dead Souls is rather lengthy if I remember correctly. I believe it's around 500 pages. It's been a really long time since I've read that book, I wonder if the friend I lent it too still has my copy of it... hmm... Another one of his works "Diary of a Madman" was also very interesting to read, which is just a taste of what he has to offer. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/283 ... on=service

I also just got recommended to read William Gibson's "The Peripheral" (By Toasterlizard, who I literally just asked for a book suggestion five minutes before I got back on here to see this thread haha) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/208 ... on=service

I'm currently reading Martin Torgoff's "Can't Find My Way Home" Which... is a very interesting book that talks a lot about the counterculture in America (Yes it's been written about /far/ too many times) yet this is written in a different way so far. It goes from Charlie Parker to Ginsberg to Leary... it's rather interesting so far. It's quite long though, which has thrown me off of it for a bit, but I plan to get back to it quite soon. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/429 ... on=service

Hopefully you find at least one book in here you'll like, and I also recommend reading 1984, which is rather interesting.
I've worked on a fair amount of things. Also I enjoy factsheets. Yell at me if there is a substance not on there, if there is one missing. I'm also an operator on the IRC. Been around since forever.
